JODHPUR, Rajasthan
The majestic fort at
Jodhpur,
built on a rocky outcrop 120 meters above the town, is one
of the finest in Rajasthan.
Jodhpur,
located on the edge of Thar Desert, founded in 1459 by Rao
Jodha, was once the capital of the powerful state of
Marwar.
Jodhpur is still a marvelously medieval city, and the
older part of the town is still encircled by a 10 km long
fortification.
Places of Interest:
The Mehrangarh Fort:
Perhaps the most majestic fort in the
state of Rajasthan, it is also the prettiest, with its
fine palaces embellished with delicate carving and
beautiful lattice work windows. Among the palaces are the
Moti Mahal, Sukh Mahal, and Phool Mahal. Within the fort
are also extensive collections of paintings, musical
instruments, furniture, costumes, palanquins and even
cradles. There is a splendid view of the city from the
ramparts of the fort with its display of old cannons.
Jaswant Thada:
Royal cenotaphs are grouped around a
memorial in white marble to Maharaja Jaswant Singh II.
Umaid Bhawan Palace:
An
imposing sandstone structure built by Maharaja Umaid Singh
II and completed in 1943, the palace is now a hotel. In
its museum are fine collections of clocks, paintings,
silver and porcelain.
